Beta Release!!

This week I worked for twenty-one hours on Furtherance and was able to release the first beta of the Iced re-write! Three big projects took most of the time--styling, upgrading to Iced 0.13, and setting up VMs for building and testing.

Iced 0.13 was unexpectedly released while I was putting the finishing touches on Furtherance. It really couldn't have been better timing. Well, earlier would have been better, but at least it wasn't later. I was able to make all of the necessary changes to the broken Iced 0.12 code in about a day and a half, which I didn't think was bad at all. I had spent a lot of time styling the app before this, and all of that styling broke in 0.13, but luckily it was mostly just a job of copying and pasting into the new format and I was back up and running.

So much of my time this week went into setting up Windows 11 VMs to build and test for Windows (both x86 and ARM). Every time I use Windows I get so frustrated. Talk about a terrible operating system. But a lot of users are there and I want to make Furtherance available to all, so it is what it is. Unfortunately, I still haven't figured out how to include a copy of the Visual C++ Redistributable in the Furtherance installer, which is a dependency of Furtherance on Windows (which is dumb). For now, if you are on Windows you will need to install that yourself (most people will probably already have it installed).

That's all I've got this week. You can download the Furtherance 24.9 beta on GitHub.
